Messmer struggles with this contradiction himself, pondering his mother’s motives throughout our tantalising duel with him.

Messmer’s dissenting opinion of us was Jack Barton’s first lines in a video game, but he has more substantial history in front of a camera. You may recognise him as Fop from Poor Things, David in the Netflix show Heartstopper, or the short Chronic for which he was nominated as best actor by The Little Wing Film Festival.

Needle Knight Leda (Naomi Yang)

Needle Knight Leda (Naomi Yang)
Needle Knight Leda (Naomi Yang)

Needle Knight Leda is the first character that players meet when excitedly jumping into the Shadow of the Erdtree. Leda is on the surface what anyone would expect from the leader of Miquella’s devout: oozing honour, and embodying the kind light of Miquella in her garb who she fiercely reveres.

What will the Tarnished find when they gaze beneath that surface?

Naomi Yang is no stranger to performances for video games. She is best known for her role as Sage in the popular tactical shooter, Valorant. You can also find her in Diablo IV, Total War: Warhammer III, and more.

Outside of the computer realm, she has spent the wealth of her career in TV, most notably in the Sky series Wolfe as Maggy. You may also recognise her from Season 6 of Peaky Blinders as Li.  A highlight of her career has been her performance in the BAFTA-nominated film Lilting.

Sir Ansbach (Ben Miles)

Sir Ansbach (Ben Miles)

Sir Ansbach is the wise, measured, and thoughtful one of Miquella’s followers. He devotes his time to investigating what Miquella is doing in the Lands of Shadow and asks the Tarnished to help him track down Miquella’s crosses. He was a Captain of Mogh’s Pure Blood Knights but bears the Tarnished no ill will for slaying his former master.

Ben Miles is a prolific English actor who has starred in various roles outside of video games, like many on this list, Elden Ring Shadow of the Erdtree was his first video game credit too.

So, instead you’ll recognise him from film and TV shows dating back to 1989, but most recently in Star Wars: Andor, The Crown, and The Capture.

Igon (Richard Lintern)

Igon (Richard Lintern)

Along the path to the Jagged Peak one will encounter quite possibly the most iconic character in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree.

Igon seeks revenge against Bayle the Dread and will do anything it takes. He drags his broken body up a mountain side and along the way crafts arrows designed to fell even the mightiest of Dragonkin. When his body fails, his spirit calls upon you, the Tarnished, to aid him in his quest; will you take him up on it?

The answer is, “Yes absolutely!” because otherwise you will miss out one of the best performances in this DLC, executed by Richard Lintern, who despite this being his first video game credit has quickly won the hearts and minds of Elden Ring fans.

Richard is best known for his role as Dr. Thomas Chamberlain in Silent Witness but has enjoyed a successful and well varied career in Theatre, TV, Film and Documentaries, where he notably narrated Between Life and Death which won a BAFTA.

Moore (Freddy Carter)

Moore (Freddy Carter)

Moore is arguably one of the friendliest characters the Tarnished will encounter in their journey through the Lands of Shadow. Though perhaps Ansbach contests him for that title…

Moore is the resident outfitter, merchant, and gentle giant of Miquella’s faithful. He arms the player with many useful consumables, upgrade materials, and cookbooks if you follow his quest. Be kind to his brood.

Our big pot friend Moore is played by Freddy Carter, who has never taken a video game role before but is most known for his performance in the hit netflix adaptation of Shadow and Bone, Free Rein, and Wonder Woman.

Redmane Frejya (Stefanie Martini)

Redmane Frejya, true to her name, is a loyalist of General Radahn who the Tarnished defeated in his scarlet-rot blighted state in the base game.

After being saved by him in the scarlet hell of Aeonia, Frejya now pledges herself to Miquella the Kind. Should the Tarnished take up arms with her in Belurat, she’ll recognise them as a fellow warrior that she is grateful to have around.

Stefanie Martini is a bristolian actress who has an extensive history in TV, with her most notable roles being her leading role in Prime Suspect 1973, The Last Kingdom, and The Gold which was nominated at the BAFTAs. Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree is her first video game credit.

The Hornsent (Jonathan Forbes)

The Hornsent (Jonathan Forbes)

The frigid, hell-bent on revenge Hornsent is played by Jonathan Forbes, who infuses his words with the dark history of the Hornsent’s people. He detests those of Marika’s ilk yet begrudgingly offers his alliances to the Tarnished assuming they too are devoted to Miquella – are they?

Regardless, tread carefully, for the Hornsent’s hatred burns hotter than Messmer’s flame.

Jonathan made his debut in the acting world in 1997 and has since performed in a myriad of mediums from theatre to video games. His first video game credit was in the racing game DiRT 2 but you may have also heard him in Vampyr, A Plague Tale, and Dying Light 2.

Thiollier (Sam Glen)

Thiollier (Sam Glen)

Sam Glen plays Thiollier who is one of Miquella’s followers, but seems to have a deeper penchant for the elusive St Trina, especially after a certain marker of progression in the Elden Ring expansion. When he’s not entranced by his thoughts of Saint Trina, Thiollier is a softie that doesn’t think he’s much use to anyone, but stick with him and see him grow.

Thiollier is a memorable character for many Tarnished due to his later available aid in your journey and questline.

Sam has a substantial history in TV series, with his longest recurring role being the CBBC production World’s End. He also briefly appeared in the world’s longest running soap, Coronation Street as a recurring character.

More recently, he played in the highly acclaimed theatrical performance The Book of Mormon debuting in 2023 and still performing into 2024 as Elder Cunningham in the West End of London.

Midra (Connor Byrne)

Midra (Connor Byrne)

Residing in his manse deep within the Abyss, Midra is gripping onto the last strands of his sanity as he endures the Greatsword of Damnation’s Golden Crux. This horrifying punishment was thrust upon him by the Hornsent Inquisition, for the calamity he almost brought to the Lands of Shadow. He warns you to stay away, but what Tarnished could help themselves?

Attempt to slay the maddened man at your own peril.

Midra’s pained pleas are squeezed out by Connor Byrne who is no stranger to Fromsoft games having played as both the memorable Father Gascoigne in Bloodborne and Laddersmith Gilligan in Dark Souls 2. He is also known for his performances outside of video games in Flushed Away, The Dumping Ground, and Emmerdale Farm.

Count Ymir (Matthew Gravelle)

Count Ymir (Matthew Gravelle)

“Long ago, we began as stardust, born of a great rupture far across the skies.”

Found in Scadu Atlus, Count Ymir, High Priest of Manus Metyr is another monumental character for the lore of Elden Ring. He and his questline unveil the hidden truths of the Fingers, the Greater Will and Marika’s relationship with them. It brings the eldritch horror of Bloodborne to Elden Ring and it is beautifully unsettling.

He is brought to life by the voice acting veteran Matthew Gravelle, who is also an award-winning animator and BAFTA-nominee for his acting performance in 35 Diwrnod. Notable roles from his voice acting history are Xenoblade, Final Fantasy XVI, and Witcher 3 where he played as Ewald Borsodi.

Jolán (Eleanor Matsuura)

Jolán (Eleanor Matsuura)

Jolán, Swordhand of Nighthand, from her youth trained and came to serve Ymir. Even if you care little for the lore, look at that fashion. It’s Sauron and Apollyon’s love child!

Just make sure you finish the quest right if you want her sword…

Jolán’s voice actress Eleanor probably draws upon the grit of her experience in worlds such as The Walking Dead as Yumiko Okumura, and Final Fantasy as Renda-Rae/The Ranger of Darkness to infuse Jolan with her cold dangerous distance.

Matsuura has also played roles in Wonder Woman and Jack Snyder’s Justice League as Epione, and is often remembered as Hannah Santo in Spooks: The Greater Good.

Grandam (Sorcha Cusack)

Grandam (Sorcha Cusack)

Grandam, formerly known as Hornsent Grandam, is an easy character to miss but one that no Tarnished should want to. She seems to be a veritable treasure trove of lore about the Hornsent people and hints regarding the magical world-system in Elden Ring as a whole. She has plenty of dialogue and offers tasty snacks, so be sure to return to her throughout your journey.

If you missed her, get another playthrough going, and make sure to explore the Belurat Tower Settlement thoroughly!

She is played by Sorcha Cusack, who has no prior experience in video game voice acting but is well known for her long running role in Father Brown as Mrs McCarthy, her performance in the cult classic Snatch and Sky TV’s A Discovery of Witches.

Florissax (Kajsa Mohammar)

Florissax (Kajsa Mohammar)
Florissax (Kajsa Mohammar)

Found at the Jagged Peak, near the Cerulean Coast, the Dragon Communion Priestess Florissax is both the source of great draconic power for our Tarnished and great source of lore. She touches on Ancient Dragon and Drake history, Placidusax, the newly introduced Bayle the Dread, and what the deal is with Dragon Communion.

Will you consume more drake hearts in her master’s honour?

The Placidusaxian loyalist’s fires are voiced by Kajsa Mohammar who you might recognise from her acting debut in Endeavour, The Little Mermaid or even Dune: Part Two. She has also lent her voice to Final Fantasy XVI, Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, and Vampire the Masquerade in various supporting roles. Prior to her acting career, she made her name as a fashion model.
