Dubbing for Global Reach: Why Netflix Has So Many Dubbed Shows - Voquent

With the rise of streaming platforms like Netflix, dubbing has seen a surge in demand. But why are there so many dubbed shows on Netflix? Does dubbing actually benefit businesses?

In today’s world, companies are constantly seeking ways to expand their reach and connect with audiences globally. One powerful tool that has proven itself to help with this is dubbing, and many are wondering why there are so many dubbed shows on Netflix.

Once predominantly associated with martial arts movies, dubbing has become a surefire way to boost your success. It is the process of replacing the original dialogue in a video with translated dialogue in another language.

By leveraging dubbing, businesses can easily make their content accessible to international audiences and boost their viewership—if it’s done right.

The Rise of Dubbed Netflix Shows

Streaming giant Netflix has been at the forefront of leveraging dubbing to maximise its global reach. With the platform’s huge library of original content, Netflix has made huge investments into dubbing to cater to its watchers – after all, it’s far easier to engage audiences worldwide if you communicate in their native language.

Currently, over 7 million minutes of Netflix’s content is dubbed into another language and, according to the streaming giant, viewers of dubbed content increased by 120% between 2020 and 2021. Still confused on why there are so many dubbed shows on Netflix?

A big thanks to the surge in dubbed content can also be given to the rise in Korean dramas. After award-winning movie Parasite gained popularity, interest in Korean content grew significantly.

Netflix’s hit TV show Squid Game also gathered over 1.6 billion viewing hours in its first 28 days on the platform and is still Netflix’s most-liked show to date.

All of Us Are Dead also saw a surge in popularity through dubbing, with the most popular languages being English, French, German, and Spanish.  While subtitles are available for this, the dubbed version was by far more popular.

The streaming giant was also one of the first of its kind to partner with professional localisation companies. For example, SAG-AFTRA signed a contract with Netflix to cover Spanish and English dubbing on the platform.

The agreement not only boosted Netflix’s global reach but allowed SAG-AFTRA to recruit more new talent and create a wealth of new employment for voice actors.

But Why Should You Dub Your Content?

The streaming giants aren’t the only ones who can benefit from a high-quality localisation strategy.

Expanding Audience Reach

Dubbing plays a key role in breaking down language barriers and making content accessible to diverse audiences. By translating dialogue into different languages, you can grow and connect with viewers who may not be fluent in the content’s original language.

The new opportunities that dubbing can create are endless. Netflix has grown significantly thanks to dubbing, which has created a Director of International Dubbing role and several Creative Manager roles for various languages.

Improve Accessibility

Dubbed content makes it easier for non-native speakers and those with visual impairments to access and enjoy your content. Netflix not only provides dubbing but accessibility such as closed captions, which further enhances the viewing experience for audiences that need it.

Stay Competitive

In a crowded digital landscape, offering dubbed content gives you a competitive edge and sets you apart in the global market. If it weren’t for Netflix’s extensive dubbed content that was made accessible to 125 countries around the globe, the streaming platform sector might have never grown to such heights.

Increased Revenue

By tapping into new markets through dubbing, you can drive revenue growth and capitalise on untapped opportunities. When Netflix relaunched Money Heist with its English dub, the platform gained a significant revenue increase when it became the most-watched non-English series on Netflix in 2018.

And the best part? Netflix only paid $2 for the rights to the series after its cancellation on Spanish TV.
