Mass Effect 2 Voice Actors

Commander Shepard is back with a brand new crew; discover the Mass Effect 2 voice actors

The story continues…

Sovereign is defeated. His plans to unleash the full might of the Reapers on the galaxy have been slowed. But not stopped.

If Sovereign, a single reaper, could nearly defeat the combined fleets of all the council races, then what chance do we have against thousands? Commander Shepard has set out to give the galaxy a fighting chance.

Until Commander Shepard is killed. Ambushed and assassinated by a mysterious species of Reaper lackeys, known as The Collectors, Shepard is K-I-A.

That is until a human extremist group, Cerberus, revive Shepard in a miracle procedure called The Lazarus Project, effectively returning Shepard to life, 2 years later. Collectors are abducting entire human colonies, for reasons unknown, The Alliance won’t help, the council disregard the Reapers entirely. Commander Shepard must ally with the once enemy faction, Cerberus, to uncover this ploy of the Reapers.

After spending the last 2 years being put back together on a Cerberus operating table, Shepard is back. This time, Commander Shepard must collect a crew of the most brilliant scientists, warriors and rogues in the galaxy to take on the Collectors.

While the first game’s crew are irreplaceable, they have (mostly) moved on with their lives – so they are unavailable to help Shepard this time. This gives Shepard plenty of opportunity to forge new links with the cast of this game. The main objective is to learn about the characters, helping them sort out their history, and dedicate them to the suicide mission. This preparation is at the centre of the mission’s success to defeat the collectors – and prepare for the war against the Reapers.

Once again, Mark Meer and Jennifer Hale return to provide as the Mass Effect 2 voice actors for both male Shepard and Femshep. The male and female voices are both perfect for the character in different ways. As this game’s pace is slightly slower, these voice actors really get the chance to flex their abilities in a range of scenarios.

The Second-In-Command. The Perfect Human. The Ice Queen.

Miranda is a genetically altered human being, designed in a laboratory to be absolutely perfect. Powerful biotics, keen intellect, irresistible beauty; remarkably remarkable.

Everything about Miranda is designed to give her an edge over the regular human being. These genetic traits have served her well and match Cerberus’ mantra to improve and evolve humanity. Beneath the surface, Miranda’s superior genes are also her greatest flaw. She believes they define her and her achievements.

For the past 2 years, Miranda has been putting Shepard back together again to fight the Collectors. Now she is under his command; it is down to the player how Miranda will define her relationship with Shepard; it could even become romantic.

Miranda’s Mass Effect 2 voice actor is the Australian Actor, Yvonne Strahovski, who brings the character to life. While at first Yvonne brings out Miranda’s cold exterior also can bring a more vulnerable side to the character, when needed.

Garrus Vakarian is back. One of the three characters from the original Mass Effect game permanently joins the player’s team in their fight against the Collectors. Much has changed in Garrus’ life over the past 2 years. Adopting the moniker, Archangel, Garrus has been a mercenary, hunting down criminals outside of the law on Omega.

This is not the same character that was in Shepard’s crew in Mass Effect 1. Garrus is more sure of himself and is driven by revenge after a betrayal of a former friend cost Garrus his entire crew.

Underneath that, Garrus is still loyal, with the Shepard-Garrus dream team being beloved by fans. Between working on calibrations and seeking vengeance, Garrus and Femshep can kindle a romance together.

Brandon Keener provides an excellent continuation of the character. His return as a Mass Effect 2 voice actor allows the character to stand centre stage. Undertaking a larger role in the franchise, Keener scales his performance of Garrus masterfully, and Garrus’ darker aspects are wonderfully delved into.

Another of the returning cast members, Tali’Zorah, is back aboard the Normandy as part of Shepard’s crew. Over 2 years, Tali rejoined the Migrant fleet, her nomadic home of Quarians. Tali has become formidable and a great asset to her people. An expert on Geth from her experiences against Saren and the Geth in the first adventure.

Tali’s effort earned her a place among the crew of the Neema ship, providing her with the title Tali’Zorah vas Neema. The recognition of her adult status also comes with a new suit. While Tali is wary of Shepard’s affiliation with Cerberus, who have a history of aggression toward the Migrant fleet, she ultimately trusts Shepard.

Tali needs help from Shepard in completing her mission and assisting the Quarian people as they continue to work toward reclaiming their homeworld from the Geth.

Tali is a familiar face (well, mask) and welcome addition to the team. Her tech skills are unparalleled. In this sequel, her attitude is less nervous unless she is romanced by a male Shepard, where these elements of her personality resurface.

Liz Sroka continues her stellar performance of Tali’Zorah. Breathing newfound confidence into the character and returning to her roots when it is called for. Liz Sroka develops Tali across different dimensions to grow her beyond her role in the first game to become an even more central piece of the Mass Effect pie.

The Enhanced. Defense. Intelligence. (otherwise known as EDI) is an Artificial Intelligence created by the human-centric group, Cerberus. EDI serves to operate and augment Normandy’s capabilities. While the ship is still in control of the pilot, EDI can manage the cyberwarfare suite on the ship to avoid hacking attempts on the ship.

EDI is a shackled AI; while she has some degree of sentience, she is still shacked by the rules and limitations put on her by Cerberus. This stops her from developing autonomy or rebelling against the crew whilst retaining personality. She is an invaluable piece of technology.

EDI is more than just equipment; she is a crew member – perhaps shackling her is wrong?

Tricia Helfer has a significant background in acting in live-action and voice acting; she performed in Battlestar. Galactica as Number Six was also a key cast member in the video game Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars.

Needless to say, Tricia Helfer has the experience to bring to the role of EDI. Mass Effect 2 voice actor, Tricia Helfer, managed to sell EDI as an unfeeling machine whilst also moulding her performance to embody emotions and subtle elements of humanity as the character developed fuller consciousness. This required no small amount of attention to detail, which Helfer pulled off brilliantly.

I am the very model of a scientist, Salarian!

Mordin is the foremost Salarian scientist in the Mass Effect universe. While Salarians are typically hyper-intelligent, Mordin cranks it up to the max. Mordin barely even talks in full sentences because he is thinking so quickly that taking the time to construct connective

tissue during speech graciously would waste valuable time, as he strings together observations to reach his conclusion… eventually…

Mordin Solus is not a character without history. He worked with the Salarian Special Task Group (STG) on various black projects. Mordin’s magnum opus is his work in tweaking the Genophage to retain its potency in keeping the Krogan population capped – with morally dubious consequences.

The subterfuge and infiltration training he received during STG makes him as likely to cure someone as he is to put a bullet in them. Mordin is fundamentally dedicated to his patients, to the point where he is ready to kill to protect them. This makes Mordin a dangerous individual and valuable asset against the Collectors.

Michael Beattie’s voice acting helped to craft this character into who he is. The fast-paced speech became a signature, endearing trait of Mordin. Like most Salarians, Mordin does not dwell on his negative feelings for long periods of time; that doesn’t mean he is always happy. Short bursts of negative emotion can be powerful in this race, so Beattie had to work his performance to adapt to this slower, sadder version of Mordin.

Mordin was a huge success and fan favourite, in part due to Mass Effect 2 voice actor Michael Beattie. The work behind this character made him feel real and enhanced the Mass Effect universe.

Also known as Subject Zero, Jack is a badass biotic with a long criminal record, including; piracy, vandalism, murder and more. She holds a lot of pure biotic power, as well as a great deal of anger. Getting that anger and pointing it firmly toward the Collectors can make her one of the most valuable members of the crew.

Of course, she has good reason to be angry. Since childhood, Jack was tested on and altered by Cerberus to “unlock biotic potential in humanity”. Which just so happened to be found at the end of a needle and countless unethical experiments on children. After a breakout, Jack has been an outlaw.

Courtenay Taylor is the voice actor for Subject Zero. She uses her performance as a way to showcase the pure rage that Jack has toward Cerberus and beyond. She has solid emotional walls to keep herself safe, which Shepard will need to take time chipping away to understand Jack fully. No easy task.

Once those barriers are down, Courtenay Taylor’s performance is fundamentally different. She would react with aggression and lash out; she may let the player in on her more emotional side. There is a distinct vulnerability, which Taylor captures with excellence, adding to the multifaceted personality that Jack hides from the world.

One of the few Asari Justicars left in the galaxy, Samara is a devout follower of the Justicar Code, a doctrine of black-and-white justice. She wanders the galaxy, bringing wrongdoings to justice and protecting the good. Although, the code is not a ruleset that offers much wiggle room or leniency. So, Samara can seem rather extreme to many; however, if she is ready to fight the Collectors, another powerful Asari biotic is more than welcome.

Samara is an Asari in her Matriarch stage of life. Asari goes through 3 stages of life; Maiden, Matron, Matriarch. In the first 350 Maiden years, Samara was a mercenary who fought for a living, as is normal for a young Asari, which seeks excitement. Samara hit her Matron stage, in which she settled down and raised a family. Ending tragically and abruptly.

Samara’s children were all born with the genetic defect of Artdat-Yakshi, a condition that causes Asari to kill their mates in the mind melding process that is central to Asari life. One of Samara’s daughters, Morinth became a serial killer – resulting in Samara gave up her worldly possessions to become a Justicar in her Matriarch years.

The Mass Effect 2 voice actor for Samara is Maggie Baird, a voice actor, onscreen actor, and musician/ music producer. She is a woman of many talents – a trait that clearly runs through her family lineage, as she is also the mother to the world-renowned musical artist Billy Eilish.

The voice that she provides to Samara is perfect for the character. Samara has a stern, matter-of-fact attitude; she is unwilling to bend her code for any circumstances. Although, there is a sadness beneath her coldness, which is clear in every word she speaks. Maggie Baird brings her A-game for an unforgettable character that gives us a new view of the Asari.

A Drell Assassin of unparalleled ability. Many hired killers will fit their targets into a scope and kill them from afar; Thane gets in close and kills his targets personally. Thane is a deadly adversary to contend with by mixing stealth, biotics, fighting ability, and a keen understanding of weaponry. He does not waste his efforts as a simple tool; he chooses only to end the lives of the wicked. Just the kind of person needed for the Suicide mission against the Collectors.

Despite his line of work, Thane is a deeply religious man. He prays in service of the wicked after each act of violence he commits, though not in their favour, in his own. Thane’s past is filled with murder, revenge and isolation. His past has left his son abandoned and alone – a problem which Thane must one day come to terms with and address with what time he has left.

Thane is dying of an incurable disease, Kepral Syndrome, a non-communicable disease that drastically dampens an infected Drell’s body from taking in oxygen. Over time this deteriorates all major bodily organs, ultimately resulting in death. The Suicide mission is important to him, as it represents one final opportunity to do some good before he is no longer capable.

Keythe Farley provides the voice for Thane. While Farley has not got a particularly long portfolio of voice acting roles, his work as a voice director is extensive. He has served as the voice director for many high-profile video games, including the original God of War series, and Cyberpunk 2077.

Farley’s masterful understanding of voice direction helps inform his performance as Thane. Thane’s voice is layered with various effects to give a gravelly, rough sound to his speech, enhancing the alien aspects. Thane is filled with regret and idealism, which Keythe replicates Farley.

A genetically pure Krogan, Grunt is a born soldier. Unlike other Krogan that Shepard encounters, Grunt is tank-bred, designed and born in a test tube by Warlord Okeer. He was created to be a super-soldier, a genetic legacy of the Warlord. Okeer was not trying to produce a Krogan to overcome the Genophage, which had become the benchmark for a successful Krogan, Grunt was made to be the next step in Krogan evolution.

While Grunt was implanted with the history and remembrance of the Krogan people, he was not given any imprint that forced him to care about any of it. So Grunt is lost as to his purpose, other than to fight. Taking this raw potential and refining it is Shepard’s job – so that Grunt is ready to find purpose in taking down the Collectors.

Steve Blum joins the cast of the Mass Effect voice actors with his role as Grunt. You are likely familiar with his name because Steve Blum is one of the most prolific voice actors in the business. He has voiced countless characters, like Spike Spiegel from Cowboy Bebop and Wolverine.

He brings his expertise to Grunt, too, as his classic style is on display. Steve Blum’s deep pitch is perfect for a Krogan character. While it can be easy for Krogan characters to all feel the same, Grunt is distinguished by Steve Blum’s performance. He has a distinct child-like aspect to his personality; as a tank-bred Krogan, he was aged rapidly.

This accelerated ageing has resulted in Grunt still being a young Krogan, which is replicated in his appearance and behaviour. Blum taps into this when he speaks as Grunt, as the character tends to say and sound like a toddler at times… A 7-foot toddler with a shotgun…

A Geth platform that is designed to be superior to average Geth units and operate independently, outside the Perseus Veil. Geth is a hive mind intelligence; each Geth is smarter when linked with nearby Geth, like the programs in each platform link together to enhance the abilities of all linked Geth, so working as a singular unit is tricky. That is why Legion houses over 1,183 programs active in it instead of the approximately 100 programs in the average unit.

Legion is designed to interact with organics, specifically Shepard. Therefore, Legion is even capable of speech, among other abilities, to help facilitate co-operation with organics. Fortunately, this means that Legion can provide an educated and informed window into the Geth as the only sentient synthetic race in the Mass Effect universe. A unique perspective on life that reframes the Geth from being merely enemies.

D.C. Douglas was trained as a stage actor before he pivoted to voice acting. He has held roles in significant gaming franchises outside of Mass Effect; Wesker from Resident Evil and Kamoshida in Persona 5. Legion is a unique character with an even more unusual voice. Legion has a monotone, straight-forward speech pattern, largely devoid of any emotion. Therefore, D.C. Douglas was required to remove as much expression from his voice as possible while still retaining an interesting character, a fairly tall order.

Fortunately, Legion is a beloved character, largely down to Douglas’ ability to make the character attractive to the players.

One of the best soldiers that the Alliance had to offer until he left the organisation after the Geth attack on the human colony Eden Prime. Since then, Jacob has joined up with Cerberus to make a difference with them. He joins Shepard against the Collectors to stand up for Humanity.

While Jacob may seem unaffected by anything, underneath, he has trauma. His father left many years ago, presumed dead; however, once his location begins transmitting again, Jacob looks to find closure by investigating the site.

Jacob is a bit of an everyman type character, simple and reliable, which Mass Effect 2 voice actor Adam Lazarre-White brings to the table with him. His strong ethical code and military attitude are replicated well in Lazarre-White’s work as Jacob.

The greatest thief in the galaxy, Kasumi Goto, is sly, sneaky, and very enigmatic. A DLC addition to the game, Kasumi comes with her own adventure – to put together a heist and rob a galactic criminal of important secrets that threaten peace in the Milky Way.

Overall, Kasumi is an expert in all things infiltration and subterfuge. She is a master in stealth, hacking, thievery and an excellent fighter; having her around is an excellent candidate to confront the Collectors in the final mission.

She is not all serious though, in fact, Kasumi is rather mischievous, as she uses her invisibility cloak function to sneak around and do things she shouldn’t constantly. These aren’t always professional; they are commonly just for the fun of it. When onboard the Normandy, she is prone to knowing everything about the crew’s secrets.

Kym Hoy lends her voice to Kasumi. The sound of her voice is tricky to nail down precisely, as it has a general oriental English accent to her character. Resultingly, her accent is not especially native to a clear region, which helps keep the character clear and digestible for the audience.

Mass Effect 2 voice actor Kym Hoy must have put a lot of work into this accent. It would require attention to be able to craft this unique Asian sounding character and consistently return to this speech in each new recording session. Nevertheless, Hoy made the character sound believable and gave Kasumi a personality all her own.

A Mercenary professional who has been in the business for a long time. Zaeed is a hired gun, ready to take on anything if the price is right. He is coarse, rough, and looking for a fight. Fortunately, the Collectors can accommodate.

Zaeed has a history as one of the founders of the mercenary group, the Blue Suns. However, Zaeed’s partner betrayed him and left him for dead, losing his eye in the process. Part of the agreement for Shepard is for them to find his old partner and get some good old fashioned revenge.

Robin Sachs is an accomplished actor on screen and in voice acting. He has a particularly long relationship with Bioware projects, including Mass Effect’s partner franchise, the medieval fantasy game Dragon Age. Sachs brings his long experience and classical acting background into the forefront to sell the character of Zaeed as authentic and realistic.

As long as there is a Normandy, you will see Joker flying her. Joker returns from the first game’s crew to get Shepard around the galaxy in style. He returns to his usual self, living up to Joker’s name with a constant stream of sarcasm and levity. In many ways, Joker breaks the forth wall with comments about the crew made as if to talk directly to the player rather than Commander Shepard.

While Joker is the same old guy, Normandy is not. The destruction and rebuild of the Normandy came with a new addition, that being EDI. Joker and EDI do not get along at first. You never take control of a ship away from a pilot like Joker, and that is what EDI seems like at first. She also exists to police Joker’s behaviour, reining in his more ridiculous ideas.

Seth Green also returns to the role of Joker, providing more of the same for the role – which is not a complaint. Joker is a good friend to Shepard and a nice way to break up the seriousness of the plot.

The Leader of Cerberus. A man of mystery and secrecy. The Illusive Man.

One of the most formidable leaders of any organisation in the galaxy, the Illusive Man believes in the Reapers and sees the threat they represent to the Galaxy. He spares no expense on Project Lazarus, the scientific undertaking to resurrect Commander Shepard. He achieved the impossible on one soldier to take the fight to the Collectors. While he is not trustworthy, he is the best that humanity has got in its hour of need, so an uneasy alliance between Shepard and the Illusive man is necessary for the greater good.

As the leader of the pro-human organisation, Cerberus, the Illusive man is vehemently pro-human. He sees the potential in his species, as well as the way that humans are mistreated and underestimated by the rest of the galaxy. He aims to rectify this and ensure human dominance across space. The minutia of this motivation is less clear; how he aims to achieve this may be uncomfortable for those that stand against him.

Bioware splashed out with this character and enlisted the work of Martin Sheen. THE Martin Sheen. It was almost a guarantee that Martin Sheen would provide a brilliant performance, and he did not disappoint.

The Illusive Man sets the bar for a new character. His smokey yet smooth sound makes him sound mysterious and confident.

The oldest Reaper among the army of genocidal sentient starships, waiting in Dark Space. Harbinger leads the forces of the Reapers as the first of their kind – this entity has harvested immeasurable species across millions of years. Now he has come for us.

Defeating Sovereign in Mass Effect was just the tip of the iceberg. Harbinger is older, tougher, and has been around longer than can be imagined. In Mass Effect 2, this Reaper is behind the Collectors and their plan to harvest humanity before the arrival of the Reapers. This creature has the capacity to control and indoctrinate across vast stretches of space, a testament to its raw power.

However, Commander Shepard is a threat. Harbinger has tried, repeatedly, to stop Shepard, even killing the Commander in the destruction of the original Normandy SR-1.

Harbinger uses a similar style of voice effect as Sovereign – to create a booming, bassy sound whenever the entity speaks. A Reaper is capable of indoctrination, a brainwashing effect that affects creatures simply by being near it. The strong bass voice of Harbinger is supposedly to be similarly overwhelming to make it feel as though this starship is boring into your mind. Adding to the overpowering intimidation that it exudes.

Keith Szarabajka is Harbinger’s Mass Effect 2 voice actor in this game. He is a man with a long history of roles in film, TV, and video games. His typical vocal traits apply to characters with low pitched, gruff voices. So pivoting to a character like Harbinger is slightly outside of his usual.
