Travel to the Land of Ooo and meet the Adventure Time voice actors that made the show legendary.

♫Adventure Time
Come on grab your friends
We’ll go to very distant lands
With Jake the Dog and Finn the Human
The fun will never end; it’s Adventure Time!♫

Finn the Human (Jeremy Shada)

Finn the Human (Jeremy Shada)

  • Finn
  • Heroic

Finn the Human is the last human in The Land of Ooo. He lives in a treehouse (a house that is a tree) with his best friend Jake the Dog. Finn is a hero; that is his role in this distant land.

Most days, Finn will be going on adventures and generally just hanging out with his various wacky friends. He tends to use strange words and terms that are a signature of the show, Algebraic, Alphanumeric and Mathematical being some of the most popular.

Jeremy Shada endows Finn with a child-like wonder, as well as an idealistic perspective. While Finn has his ups and downs, he is usually pretty optimistic and generally a pleasant character. He is enthusiastic and tends to do what is right – that is what makes him a hero.

Shada’s role as Finn is certainly his highest-profile performance to date, although he has worked on various projects. One of the wonderful quirks of the show is that the Adventure Time voice actors commonly sing as the characters. This gives talented performers like Jeremy Shada the chance to show off some vocal range.

Jake the Dog (John DiMaggio)

Jake the Dog (John DiMaggio)
Jake the Dog (John DiMaggio)

Jake is one of the main characters of the show and Finn’s best friend. While he is a dog, technically, he is also a shapeshifter and can alter his body into all sorts of stretchy forms. Finn and Jake are adoptive brothers, living together in the treehouse. He is also in a relationship with Lady Rainicorn.

His behaviour is tremendously laid back and chilled out. He doesn’t like taking things seriously and always has some odd advice to be given out to Finn, filling in his role as an older brother.

The legendary John DiMaggio lends his voice acting skills to the character of Jake the Dog in his distinct style. The rough, deep sound that DiMaggio provides is unexpectedly matched with a cute and cuddly character like Jake. However, it does work well, as Jake is something of a breakout character.

John DiMaggio’s vocal performance as Jake is similar to the sound he provides to Bender from Futurama. Another one of his standout roles.

Princess Bubblegum (Hynden Walch)

Princess Bubblegum (Hynden Walch)
Princess Bubblegum (Hynden Walch)

Princess Bubblegum is the monarch ruler of the Candy Kingdom, a territory in The Land of Ooo. She is also an on-again-off-again crush of Finn the Human – although, ultimately, her heart belongs to Marceline the Vampire.

The Candy Kingdom is a kingdom with people made of candy, looking to the Princess for guidance and leadership. She is a kind and benevolent leader with excellent manners and a normally good nature. This is not to say that she is all good, as elements of her personality are occasionally darker, with multiple instances where her experiments may cross the line.

She is an affectionate friend, a terrifying enemy and a fair ruler. Capturing each facet of this character is something that Hynden Walch does brilliantly. The characters many juxtaposed emotions all feel natural to the character as the connective thread that is Hynden Walch’s remains consistent.

Before serving as an Adventure Time voice actor, Walch has been attached to numerous popular franchises, most notably among them is Teen Titans, where she played the beloved Starfire.

The Ice King (Tom Kenny)

The Ice King (Tom Kenny)

  • Simon
  • Wacky

The Ice King, formerly Simon Petrikov, is a maniacal wizard who lives in the Ice Kingdom, a frozen mountainous wasteland with only Penguins to keep him company. The Ice King desperately seeks a princess to love him, to the point where he produces countless plans to kidnap princesses to bring back to the Ice Kingdom.

At first, he is the show’s antagonist, with Finn and Jake consistently working to overcome his plans to kidnap Princess Bubblegum. Although, as the show progresses, it is clear to see that the man that was once Simon has been twisted and driven to insanity by the power of the Ice King’s Crown. This reframes him as a tragic character, which definitely adds to the character’s depth.

Tom Kenny is a well-established performer, even prior to becoming an Adventure Time voice actor. He is doubtlessly used to unconventional characters, as he voices Spongebob Squarepants, one of the most popular characters in animated television. Beyond this, he has a portfolio of work across an assortment of animation franchises.

Tom Kenny brings his diverse abilities to the forefront for this role, as he moves from outright villain to sympathetic madman across the run of the programme. His relationship with Marceline produces many of the most touching moments, so his ability to connect with the audience, whilst remaining villainous is a testament to Tom Kenny’s experience and talent. He even won an Annie Award for best voice acting in 2014 for his performance.

Marceline the Vampire (Olivia Olson)

Marceline the Vampire (Olivia Olson)

  • Marceline
  • Cool

Marceline is a vampire, someone who has lived alone for many centuries in the Land of Ooo. She is fearless, mischievous, and can fend for herself – as she has been doing for hundreds of years. Although, it’s not all fun and games with Marceline. She has a deep emotional side that she has learned to hideaway after a long life of hardships.

While she started as an antagonist in her entry into the show, she quickly transformed into one of Finn’s closest friends. Marceline connects with many members of the cast emotionally. She has a long history with Ice King, from when he was known as Simon. The two of them walked the apocalyptic world together before either of them transformed. She also shares a romance with Princess Bubblegum, one of the fandom’s most beloved pairings.

Olivia Olson provides the voice for Marceline the Vampire. While she has performed in some notable franchises, such as Phineas and Ferb, she has not got a tremendously long catalogue of work. However, her work as Marceline is superb; she provides some of the most engaging emotional depth in Adventure Time. She owns the role, fully, with her ability to come across as intensely emotional or completely nonchalant and unphased alternating moment-to-moment.

Lumpy Space Princess (Pendleton Ward)

Lumpy Space Princess (Pendleton Ward)
Lumpy Space Princess (Pendleton Ward)
  • Lumpy Space Princess
  • Bossy

Lumpy Space Princess (LSP) is one of the stranger characters in Adventure Time. She looks like a big, purple cloud with a big golden star just implanted in her forehead. The best adjective for Lumpy Space Princess’ appearance is lumpy.

Her behaviour is often bratty. She has a tendency to make everything about her, regardless of whether she is even involved in the situation. Her character behaviour is similar to the stereotypical “Valley Girl” persona – where she is constantly involved in teen-level drama. This leads to numerous quirks to her character where she does whatever she can to be the centre of attention.

Pendleton Ward, the show’s creator, serves as the voice actor for LSP. Pendleton captures the essence of her character marvellously. He slurs his words slightly, to give off the lazy teen vibe. He also provides a comedic element to her voice, as she has a relatively rough, deep-pitched sound despite her outwardly teenage girl behaviour.

BMO (Niki Yang)

BMO (Niki Yang)
BMO (Niki Yang)
  • Be MOre
  • Lovable

BMO (pronounced Beemo) is a sentient handheld gaming device that lives with and accompanies Finn and Jake. While BMO is alive, her friends can play video games on her with as much sentience as any other character. Fortunately, she comes with two controllers for multiplayer!

She looks like an old-fashioned Macintosh computer, with buttons that feature the Game Boy Color, and her controllers are modelled after the Atari 2600 controllers. BMO also has an entire operating system – so she can be used just like a computer.

BMO is kind, gentle, and a dedicated companion to Finn and Jake. While she claims not to have emotions, this cannot be the case, as she expresses a wide array of likes, dislikes, and feelings about her friends. She loves games and constantly provides extra levity to the show whenever she is around.

Niki Yang is the voice actor for BMO, providing the character with a very unique and signature style. She constantly gives the character a higher-pitched and generally sweet sound. The character of BMO is small and playful, so Niki Yang capturing this was instrumental to her success. One of the most unique traits about BMO’s voice performance is that she carries over an accent from the voice actor, Niki Yang. Coming from South Korean Nativity, Yang uses her natural, authentic accent in her work as BMO – adding a unique sound to the character.

Fun Fact: Niki Yang is also the voice actor for Lady Rainicorn, a magical flying unicorn-type creature, and Jake’s partner. This character only speaks in Korean, making her speech unique among the show, with audiences needing to rely on subtext, context and body language to interpret her words.

The Earl of Lemongrab (Justin Roiland)

The Earl of Lemongrab (Justin Roiland)
  • Justin Roiland
The Earl of Lemongrab (Justin Roiland)

Lemongrab is a humanoid lemon created by Princess Bubblegum to rule the Earldom of Lemongrab. However, his creation was not as successful as had been hoped. Lemongrab is paranoid, overzealous, extreme and hard to get along with. For most of his life, he has been sheltered and spoiled by servants, so he is an antagonist when he joins the show. While it appears that he may have redeeming qualities, he quickly spirals into a cruel dictator over the lemon people.

Justin Roiland of Rick and Morty performs as The Earl of Lemongrab in Adventure Time. He endows the character with an unconventional form of speech. Rather than speaking, Lemongrab typically screams and screeches his lines. This is the signature voice that Lemongrab has, which is a testament to his intensity and instability.

The Lich (Ron Perlman)

The Lich (Ron Perlman)
The Lich (Ron Perlman)
  • The Lich
  • Evil

The Lich is an ancient evil, a cosmic being who manifests entropy and the death of all things. He landed on Earth millions of years ago and has since attempted to eradicate life. He was defeated by Billy the Hero long ago but has since returned, and the only people who can stop him are the heroes of Ooo.

This entity has an inhuman sound. He is a monster, demonic, and is looking to destroy life. The Lich is not the type of character who has redeeming qualities – to his core; he is a beast. And he is not funny.

The Lich is voiced by Ron Perlman. A well-known actor with a long history of onscreen performances, with Alien and Hellboy being among them. Outside of this, he has an established voice acting career. As a voice actor, he has been in Halo and Tangled, so it is fair to say he has earned the voice actor title. He uses his range to give the Lich an incredibly dark and malicious tone, an excellent fit for the character.
