About the Transatlantic accent

The Mid-Atlantic accent is a practised dialect of English.

It blends the British RP accent with standard American English. The accent is most associated with the early days of Hollywood and was only taught in private and drama schools to the American upper classes.

The use of the accent fell after WW2 and nowadays the accent generally describes a voice that has spent equal time in American and in the UK i.e. an English voice that’s ‘difficult to place’.

It’s not the same as the traditional Transatlantic accent but it still shares similarities and it’s become hugely popular in recent years. Particularly for corporate communications and commercials. So businesses seek out Transatlantic Voice Actors.

More about the Transatlantic accent

Transatlantic voice actor agency

The traditional Mid-Atlantic / Transatlantic style of speaking is non-rhotic (R-less) and used to be associated primarily with privileged white North Americans.

It’s analogous to the RP English dialect it imitates.

Today Transatlantic more commonly describes an English speaker that sounds ‘worldly’ i.e. they could be from between America and Britain – yep ‘Mid-Atlantic’.

The point is the speaker nativity is difficult to pinpoint, and this makes the accent appealing to marketers seeking to connect with English-speaking audiences around the globe.

It’s a safe bet that a transatlantic voice over will reduce localisation costs considerably.
