Interview: Jonah Scott Talks Beastars, Demon Slayer, and What Fans Don’t See Behind the Mic - Voquent

Jonah Scott has built a voice that many anime fans now know well.

He first broke through to a wide audience as Legoshi in the English dub of Beastars. The Netflix series, based on the manga by Paru Itagaki, became a global hit and amplified Scott’s work to millions of viewers. His performance earned a nomination for Best Voice Artist Performance at the Crunchyroll Anime Awards. The series continues to draw new audiences, with the final season arriving in 2026.

Since then, Scott has become a familiar presence across modern anime. Fans of Blue Lock know him as Oliver Aiku, a fan-favourite defender in the high-stakes football series now streaming on major platforms. He also voices Katakuri in the long-running phenomenon One Piece, and Kokushibo in Demon Slayer. The latest Demon Slayer film opened to record-breaking numbers worldwide and received recognition at the Critics’ Choice AAPI Celebration alongside several major award nominations.

But Scott’s journey into voice acting was not always clear.

Before the studio and the microphone, he worked manual jobs, including roofing. The work proved too demanding to sustain, and he stepped away. That decision opened the door to a different path in performance.

Jonah Scott once believed his strengths lay in dramatic roles. His voice and training leaned towards grounded, serious characters. Comedy felt out of his reach. Over time, that assumption changed. As new roles arrived, he found himself exploring comedic timing and lighter performances. In some cases, casting directors even chose him to speak in his natural voice – rather than a stylised character tone. It surprised him as much as anyone.

His work often touches on themes of identity and acceptance. Scott speaks openly about being bisexual and about the value of representation within the characters he plays. Beastars, with its world of anthropomorphic animas, gave him a platform to explore ideas of difference and belonging. He has also voiced strong support for the furry community, which overlaps with many fans of the series. His goal remains simple: to come across as a welcoming and non-judgemental presence for audiences who see themselves reflected in those stories.

Scott maintains an extensive list of voice roles across television and gaming.

His credits include series such as Sk8 The Infinity, Super Crooks, Campfire Cooking in Another World with My Absurd Skilland Kaiju No.8. In games, players may recognise his work in titles like Fire Emblem Engage, Pokemon Masters EX, and Path of the Midnight Sun.

He remains an anime fan at heart. Like many viewers, he follows manga releases closely and hopes to appear in future adaptations when they reach the screen.

Scott also speaks with care about the craft behind anime dubbing. Online debates often frame subtitled and dubbed versions as competing experiences. For Scott, the reality is more practical. Dubbing exists to make stories accessible to wider audiences. It allows people with different needs, backgrounds, and viewing habits to engage with the same material. A wide range of voices, he argues, helps the medium grow.

That belief ties into a larger theme in his work: creative diversity. The more perspectives involved in storytelling, the stronger the result.

Away from the recording booth, Scott continues to explore new creative paths. He is currently writing a graphic novel that examines questions around artificial intelligence and the future of technology. At the same time, he speaks about the need for balance in a digital career. Social media can connect artists with fans, but he values stepping away from it when needed to protect focus and mental space.

Looking ahead, Scott has several projects on the horizon. New episodes of Beastars will bring Legoshi’s story to its conclusion. He will also appear in the upcoming independent game Project Songbird.

For Jonah Scott, each role connects back to the same idea: storytelling that reaches people in different ways. Whether through anime, games, or new creative work, the voice may change – but the goal remains steady.
