Frozen Voice Actors

Strap into your mountain gear and face the eternal winter! It's time to meet the Frozen Cast.

When the Kingdom of Arandelle is frozen over by an eternal blizzard, Princess Anna ventures into the mountains to bring her sister home and restore Arandelle to it’s former glory.

Her journey seems impossible until she stumbles upon ice harvester Kristoff, his reindeer, Sven, and the silly snowman, Olof. Who guide her through the treacherous terrain.

Despite the name, the voice actors of Frozen’s characters are full of a vibrant warmth that is sure to melt any icy heart!

Get yourself tucked in and ready to learn their stories below.

Elsa (Idina Menzel)

Elsa (Idina Menzel)

  • Elsa, The Snow Queen
  • Sombre
  • Soft

Perhaps Disney’s most iconic character from the prior decade is the Snow Queen, Elsa.

After harming her sister Anna, Elsa struggles for years to bury her powers of ice and snow. It is in this act of burial, rather than acceptance, that perhaps leads to them being so erratic and hard for her to control. She viewed her gift as monstrous and so it behaved in exactly that way, until the titular “Let It Go” scene, where she demonstrates the beauty in the beast.
Some see this as a metaphor for dealing with one’s insecurities and anxiety.

Idina Menzel’s powerful cords are the ones behind the Snow Queen’s sombre tones. She is not just the queen of ice and snow, Menzel is known as the Queen of Broadway too. Which is where she has made her name and put her vocal & acting talents on full display since her big break in 1996. Outside of Frozen you may have heard her in Rent (2005), Wicked (2003) and Enchanted (2007).

Anna (Kristen Bell)

Anna (Kristen Bell)
Anna (Kristen Bell)

Second princess of Arendelle and the main protagonist of Frozen is Anna, Elsa’s sister. Unlike her sister, Anna has no supernatural abilities, making her journey to find her sister and return her to Arendelle all the more heroic. After Elsa harmed Anna as a child she had her memories of her sister’s magic wiped and replaced. It was for this reason that she couldn’t understand why her sister locked herself and the Kingdom away for years. Despite the sudden distance from her sister, she never grew to resent her and instead Anna remained a happy-go-lucky girl all the way to adulthood.

Anna’s bouncy and awkward personality is animated by the voice of Kristen Bell. If that name rings some bells it’s because she’s been in the acting game since 1992 and has a vast array of popular credits to her name. Whilst Kristen is best known for her screen appearances, she has voice acted characters since the english dub of Miyazaki Hayao’s The Cat Returns (2002), and has appeared in video games such as Assassin’s Creed (2007/2010), Astro Boy (2009) and Kingdom Hearts 3 (2019).

Kristoff (Jonathan Groff)

Kristoff (Jonathan Groff)
Kristoff (Jonathan Groff)

Kristoff is the third main character in Frozen’s story. He harvests, carts and sells ice for a living, which unfortunately for him becomes rather redundant when Elsa’s forever winter sets in. Kristoff has interesting origins, he was an orphan and was adopted by the same troll colony that helped Anna after she was struck by Elsa’s ice as a child. It was here that he met his best friend and loyal steed, Sven, the reindeer. Due to his upbringing Sven didn’t have much of an appetite for his fellow humans, viewing them as ill-natured, until he meets Anna and through his adventure with her, he reevaluates his stance enough to fall in love.

Jonathan Groff, voices Kristoff – funny that. Johnathan, like Idina, kicked it all off with a strong career on Broadway debuting in 2005. Which he continues to perform for, earning Tony nominations in 2006 and 2015 and eventually winning for his class-act in Merrily We Roll Along (2023). He also recently picked up a Primetime Emmy for his performance in the Disney live-stage recording of Hamilton (2020). If you aren’t a theatre fan you may recognise him from the Netflix hit Mindhunter (2017-2019) or even as Smith in Matrix: Resurrections (2021).

Olaf (Josh Gad)

Olaf (Josh Gad)
Olaf (Josh Gad)

Built and animated by Princess Elsa, Olaf is a walking and talking snowman. Originally Olaf had no consciousness and only existed as a normal snowman that Elsa and Anna would play with as kids. Elsa would move his arms and give him his catch phrase of “Hi, I’m Olaf and I like warm hugs.” Unbeknownst to her, life would spark in him when Elsa flexed her powers free from the restraints of society after she fled Arendelle.

Like many of this list Olaf is brought to life by yet another Broadway actor: Josh Gad. His performance as the warmest snowman ever earned him two Annie awards for all the chuckles and awws that his voice wrought.
But that’s far from all, in theatre he has picked up a Tony award and a Grammy for his performances in the Book of Mormon which many will know him for. If not, his appearances in Beauty and the Beast (2017), Murder on the Orient Express (2017), Artemis Fowl (202) or Avenue 5 (2020-2022) may jog the memory.

Hans (Santino Fontana)

Hans (Santino Fontana)
Hans (Santino Fontana)

Hans, oh sneaky, Hans. At first introduced to us as an archetypal Prince, full of charm, duty and good looks, Hans is in fact an antagonist in Frozen. One so incredibly self-interested that he exploits Anna’s loneliness to ensure a place on the throne once Elsa is out of the way. He serves as a good lesson to not jump into romantic relationships, let alone marriage, without really getting to know someone first. Hans hails from the Kingdom of the Southern Isles, where he is 13th in line for the throne, knowing he stands no chance of succession, he sets his eyes on Arendelle.

The beguiling charm of Hans whisps it’s way into our ears thanks to Santino Fontana. He is another Tony award winner on this list, who started his career in 2006 with a Hamlet performance at the Guthrie Theatre in Minnesota. Since then he’s accumulated ten Broadway credits and starred in various film and TV. Frozen is not his sole voice-acting credit either, he’s picked up Audiobook narration as well, voicing, and winning an Audie award for, The Institute by Stephen King, as well as notably You by Caroline Kepnes and The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins.

Duke of Weselton (Alan Tudyk)

Duke of Weselton (Alan Tudyk)
Duke of Weselton (Alan Tudyk)

The Duke of Weselton is the primary antagonist of Frozen. Right when we meet him, we understand his intentions to deceive and exploit Arendelle, a long standing trade partner of his Duchy. He is perhaps quite aptly misnamed the Duke of Weaseltown, for that is exactly what he is, a weasel. Driven by greed, he plots and schemes his way around Arendelle seeking to suck the Kingdom dry even with the long-standing trade agreements he forged with Anna and Elsa’s parents. In his haste for more, he squanders it all and is packed back to Weaseltown where he belongs.

Alan Tudyk changes the trend here by entering the cast as one with predominantly voice acting credits. He has covered audiobooks, video games, animated films and cartoons. Some of the most notable voice acting credits he has are for K-2SO in Rogue One (2016),  Tucan in Encanto (2021), and Krei in Big Hero 6 (2014)

Pabbie (Ciarán Hinds)

Pabbie (Ciarán Hinds)

Pabbie (Ciarán Hinds)

Pabbie, also known as Grand Father to Kristoff and his family, is the wizened troll who helped heal Anna when she was struck by Elsa’s magic. It was he who, under the urging of the King and Queen, altered her memories to erase all occurrences of magic, replacing them with more natural explanations instead. He said that it was fortunate Anna was not struck in the heart as the heart is not so easily mended as the mind. His magical capabilities lead to him helping Anna yet again 13 years later when ice starts to spread in her heart.

British-Irish oscar and BAFTA nominee Ciarán Hinds is the voice actor behind Pabbie in Frozen. He’s notorious for the depth to his voice and the wizened or often ominous air it carries. You may know this acting giant from his performance as Mance Rayder in Game of Thrones, Steppenwolf in Justice League (2017/2021), and Dumbledore in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011).

Oaken (Chris Williams)

Oaken (Chris Williams)

Oaken (Chris Williams)

Oaken is a kind and chipper fellow who runs Wandering Oaken’s Trading Post and Sauna, and he is certainly no push over; when Kristoff tries to barter down to 25% of the original price and insults him in the process, Oaken holds his own and throws him out. We first met him when Anna came waddling in near-frozen to death with nothing but a dress to warm her back. Unfortunately, Oaken didn’t have much for her—it was July and he was stocked up for Summer, not winter blizzards.

Oscar-winning writer and director Chris Williams is behind the voice of Oaken. He has lent his voice a few times but primarily to work that he was largely responsible for. Chris William’s penmanship was behind the likes of Big Hero 6 (2014) for which he won an Oscar, the Academy nominated Bolt (2009) and similarly nominated The Sea Beast (2023), Moana (2016) and the PrimeTime Emmy winning Prep & Landing (2009). He was also a writer behind Mulan (1998) and The Emperor’s New Groove (2000).

Kai (Stephen J. Anderson)

Kai (Stephen J. Anderson)
Kai (Stephen J. Anderson)

Kai is the steward to Arendelle Castle, overseeing the needs of the Kingdom and advising Queen Elsa. He has been at Arendelle Castle since Elsa and Anna’s grandfather King Runeard was reigning. He eventually became the Chief Assistant to Agnarr and Iduna, Elsa and Anna’s parents. He is a fiercely loyal servant of the Arendelle royals, who view him more as a friend or member of the extended family than an employee despite his continuous insistence on formalities.

Kai’s few lines are voiced by the story-board artist, writer and director Stephen J. Anderson. He worked as an additional story-artist for Frozen and Frozen II (2019), as well as a myriad of other Disney films such as Zootopia (2016), Moana (2016), Wreck-it-Ralph (2012) and more. Additionally, he was the director behind Meet The Robinsons (2007) and Winnie the Pooh (2011).

Bulda (Maia Wilson)

Bulda (Maia Wilson)
  • Maia Wilson
  • IMDB
Bulda (Maia Wilson)

Bulda is a 700 year old member of the troll colony and she is Kristoff’s adoptive mother. She has a husband called Cliff but we have never met him in the films. She is the character that leads the “Fixer Upper” musical scene as she tries to bring Kristoff and Anna closer together, thinking they’d make a good match. Well, she was right on that front. The mock wedding she cooks up for them flusters them both, but seems to do exactly what she intended.

The warm voice behind the powerful vocals belongs to Maia Wilson. She’s an actress from Connecticut and most of her experience lies in theatre. With 12 years of work on the Broadway musical Rent she’s no stranger to the live stage. She has mainly taken up minor roles in her career, including a notable understudy for Joanne Jerfferson in Rent. She has also been a member of the ensemble in the award winning Book of Mormon since 2011.
Most recently, she seems to be a member of the ensemble for the theatre adaption of Working Girl by Theresa Rebeck.

Gerda (Edie McClurg)

Gerda (Edie McClurg)
  • Edie McClurg
  • IMDB
Gerda (Edie McClurg)

Gerda is a minor character in Frozen, who dutifully serves Queen Elsa and Princess Anna. She has done so since Agnar’s reign, the sisters’ father, almost as long as Kai. She has aided him in his oversight of the castle, keeping things in order. For this reason she never seems phased by Anna’s energy, as we see when she comes charging out of the room, spinning poor Gerda like a fidget spinner. Instead after the initial surprise, she smiles.
Gerda cares a lot for the girls and we see this warmth when Anna is returned to the castle by Kristoff, freezing, with the ice in her heart spreading.

Gerda is voiced by Edie McClurg, who has been performing since 5 years old and has more than 225 credits to her name. She has touched every form of media you could think a live performer could. She’s even gone beyond the performance, to the writing department a few times. You’re likely to recognise her from the adaption of King’s Carrie (1976) as Helen, Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986) as Grace and Wreck-it-Ralph as Mary (2012). She’s an incredibly experienced character voice actor, it’s a shame that Gerda wasn’t more prominent as a character so she could showcase her talents.

Bishop (Robert Pine)

Bishop (Robert Pine)
  • Robert Pine
  • IMDB

Bishop is another minor character who crowns Elsa at her coronation. He helps keep Elsa right during the ceremony but unbeknownst to him, the performance isn’t what she was worried about and in asking her to remove her gloves, puts everyone in the room at risk.

He speaks mostly in Old Norse during the scene, which is a nice nod to Frozen’s inspiration the danish fairy tale “The Snow Queen,” and this translates to English as: “As she holds the holy properties and is crowned in this holy place, I present to you …”

Bishop is voiced by Robert Pine, an actor with over 60 years in the game, starting in 1964.

He became a household name after taking on the role as Sgt. Joseph Getraer in the TV series CHiPs (1977-1983). If you weren’t old enough to be watching TV back then, then you might recognise him as Ed Woolard from Jobs (2013) or Captain Wentworth from Lakeview Terrace (2008). He wasn’t always set on acting as a career, he was a pre-med student before taking the leap. He’s also the father of PrimeTime Emmy nominee and GQ 2016 man of the year, Chris Pine.
